Week 5 announcement

ENGR 101 students,

It was great to see you all in lecture again today after a week off from lecture. Here is the weekly email with some important announcements.

In lab this week

This week in lab you will continue to develop your 2DRG machine. This week your team should be building your SM3 and connecting it to your machine, as well as sketching and analyzing your final simple machine, SM4. Be sure you are getting your fabricated parts completed, as the final demonstration (week 7) is rapidly approaching. Be sure to be taking advantage of the Monday open labs (every Monday). If you need to work in the makerspace side of the Studio during another class time, you must receive permission from that section's instructor.

Due this week

Leadership Survey #2

Later today (around 6 pm) you should receive an email with a link to the second Leadership Survey. The deadline for completing the survey is this coming Sunday, October 23 at 11:59 pm.

Online safety training 7 - 9

The last round of online safety training modules is due before lab this week. Be sure you have now completed all 9 of the introductory safety modules on Bioraft.

Policy on complex K'NEX parts

Generally we require that you disassemble all parts of your 2DRG, but if you have a highly complex K'NEX part, you can take that part with you - so as long as you return the part at the end of week 7 (after you demonstrate the 2DRG). This does not mean you take ALL of the K'NEX parts for your project. Only a very complex part that requires a lot of build time each time. Check with your section instructors if you have specific requests regarding this policy.

3D Printers in the Innovation Studio

The "Quick Start Guide" is now available on the course website under course resources. Please use this guide when using the 3D printers in the Studio (there is one printed out in each of the blue binders on either side of the Studio near the 3D printers). You should always try to minimize the volume, the material used, and the printing time for each of your prints.

Innovation Studio construction update

The unsightly power poles have been removed! We now have working drop-down power reels which provide power at each set of lab tables in the Studio and the workspace is more flexible and reconfigurable to suit your needs.

Good luck with your 2DRG work, and I'll see you all in the Studio this week!

Regards,
Brandon
